Ten things I would do if I could

  1. Abolish all hereditary titles and positions
  2. Make lying or misleading in Parliament, political manifestos / campaigns and the press / media illegal
  3. Make politicians legally liable for their actions or inactions
  4. Change the voting system so all elected bodies directly reflect the votes cast for each party
  5. Establish a minimum standard of living for every citizen which would include:
    1. Somewhere to live
    2. Enough food to eat
    3. Enough to pay for decent clothing
    4. Enough for fuel, transport and internet access
    5. Enough for a modicum of entertainment
      1. If the wages received aren’t enough then the state should top it up
      2. If the person can’t work, then their needs are catered for by the state
  6. Devolve as many Government departments as possible to the regions and countries that make up the UK
  7. Ban campaigning in referendums and appoint an independent body which can offer the facts and probable outcomes
  8. Make the primary function of Parliament the improvement of economic and social wellbeing of the country
  9. Pay Parliamentarians and other elected officials a set multiple of the average wage
  10. Abandon GDP as a measurement of economic performance and establish a new measurement which would take into account distribution of wealth.

This isn’t meant to be a cure-all, just a shopping list of ideas / rant that makes sense to me. There are many other areas of change that need to come, like establishing a Green Economy, but better thinkers than me have already covered that ground.
